EXPERIENCE RANGE

The origins of Château de La Grille date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. It was transformed and renovated in the early 19th century in the “troubadour” style by Marquis Gustave de Cougny. During this time, the wine from La Grille became the benchmark for quality in Chinon/gained renown for its quality in Chinon. In 1951, Albert GOSSET, from a long line of Champagne winemakers, acquired and expanded the property, turning it into a state-of-the-art winegrowing and winemaking facility. Since 2009, revitalized by Christophe Baudry and Jean-Martin Dutour, it has regained its brilliance, and both the location and vineyard uphold their reputation as the “Exception of Chinon”.

CUVÉE STORY

Chinon Rouge is the flagship cuvée of Château de la Grille. To maintain its level of excellence, vintages from more challenging years are not bottled. Hand-picked in mid-October, destemmed grapes naturally fall into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks equipped with pigeage for better extraction of color, aromas, and tannins. After about 3 weeks of maceration, the wines are separated from the marc (skins, seeds, and pulp) before undergoing malolactic fermentation. Aging for 12 months in barrels (50% of the cuvée) and tanks helps soften the tannins while preserving fruitiness. Finally, the wine is bottled in special bottles, replicating an 18th-century Champagne flask, and matures for nearly two years at low and constant temperatures.

VINTAGE

2007 is a very good vintage in the Loire Valley. The late season allowed grapes to reach perfect ripeness. Wines from 2007 are round and complex.
